It is a terrible thing to be in the position of having God against you. This is where Moab found themselves.
I THE MISERY THAT LAY AHEAD WHEN GOD WAS AGAINST THEM.
Cp v1-6, 8-10, 14-25.
II REASONS FOR RUIN.
- The role of idolatry. Cp v7, 35, 37, 46. Cp Is 16:12.
- A peaceful past. Cp v11-13, Ps 55:19. Trouble in life serves to make us mindful of God. Cp 2:27, Ps 86:7
- The role of pride. Cp v26-30, 42, Is 16:6. It was pride that elevated them in defiance of God which was particularly seen in their despising the people of God.
- An invader was coming, v40. N.b. For…. This was the immediate cause of their ruin.
- Because God was bringing the ruin he faced, v44. God was their enemy! Only ruin can result from that stark reality.
III SORROW FOR MOAB.
Sorrow is a proper response to the reality of wrath.
- The sorrow of God. Cp v31-32, 36 (Is 15:5). It is clear that God is the speaker here—v33, 35, 38. Cp Is 16:9, 11, Luke 19:41-42, Ezek 33:11.
- The sorrow of men. Cp v33-34, 38-39. There is a mourning that accompanies the judgement of God. Cp Matt 8:12, 13:42.
IV MOAB WILL AGAIN BE SEEN IN THE LATTER DAYS.
Cp v47.
In the last days, the end of this age, Moab will re-emerge. Currently the territory of Moab is part of the Kingdom of Jordan. It will be restored to prominence
