Acts of the Apostles, Video preaching

Responding to hostility toward the gospel

These verses describe the ongoing response of the church, under the guidance of the Apostles, to the hostility that greeted their witness for Christ.

Peter and John are released, v23 under threat of further consequences to any more preaching in Jesus’ name, v17-18, 21.

Many times God’s people come up against circumstances where they may be inclined to ask: What do we do now? The church has come to such a moment here! They had run up against a formal/legal decision by the religious authorities, that boded ill for their work. The actions of both Apostles and members of the church are a template we do well to follow.

I  AN INSTINCT FOR THEIR OWN COMPANY.

  1. The bond between God’s people. The description of the church as their own company indicates the close personal bond existing between the saints. There is a strong sense of belonging to the church seen here. This bond becomes a precious thing in days of opposition! It is undoubtedly a work of grace to form such a bond. It goes beyond natural connections. This bond is based on a common response to Christ. The contrast here is between those who rejected the Apostles’ view of Christ and those who supported and loved it.
  2. Being with their own company was a primary concern. Peter and John make it their first business upon release to seek out the company of the saints. This ought to be a priority among God’s people. Cp Heb 10:25.
  3. A desire and a duty to report. The Apostles were constrained by this desire to inform the church of the situation. They had a right and a need to know! It was a part of their duty as leaders of the work to keep the people appraised of what was happening. Only in this way could they respond correctly.

II  A PRAYERFUL REACTION.

Cp v24-30.

A united, primary response. As the report of the Apostles is heard they immediately resort to the throne of grace. They bring to the Lord the stated objectives of their enemies for His consideration. They recognize that any response to the situation must be guided and enabled by the Lord.

The view of God they express, v24-28. What we believe of God is indicated by our prayers!

His power, v24. This is demonstrated in creation. The sovereign creative, providential power of God is their first thought! God has made and is in control. There is nothing outside the scope of His power.

Shaped by the Scriptures, v25-27. The truth (v27) of this word defines their present circumstances. Learning to apply the Scriptures to our present need is a vital skill for the Christian. Especially in a time of trouble such a skill will bring vital stability. Note how the term servant is used. They pick up on this vital mindset that saturates Scripture—submission to the word in the teeth of opposition.

The purpose of God, v27-28. Even the opposition of the enemies of God is under the control of God and accomplishes His purpose. There is a tacit acknowledgement in the reference to Christ, that death may well be the result for them of this opposition. And yet they acknowledge the purpose of God in that.

What they petitioned God for, v29-30. Their prayer expresses what they desired God to do.

Behold! They wanted the Lord to see and consider. They were asking Him to take notice of the actions of their enemies and by inference to act against them. Cp Ex 14:24-25, Job 40:12.

Power. They knew the need they had of boldness and power. They desired to be faithful in continuing to preach the message that was opposed. Despite the controversy that had been stirred up they ask for more of the same!

Exaltation of Christ, v30. The reference to the Saviour indicates that this was their primary motive.
