Behold my servant, Video preaching

Preaching with power in Capernaum, Pt1

Scripture: Mark 1:16-28

Sermon notes

By this point the Saviour’s home base was in the city of Capernaum. He had moved there from Nazareth where He had been brought up. Cp Matt 4:13, Luke 4:16-32. The controversy that brought Him to Capernaum is passed over by Mark in his account. This has the effect of emphasizing that the gospel work of Christ continues apace despite opposition!

In this incident the disciples take their first steps in their public service of the Saviour. As they come after Him at His call, to be fishers of men, they are led into this experience. Their whole life experience will demonstrate one feature or another of that work the Saviour promised, v17—I will make you to become fishers of men…

I  PREACHING ON THE SABBATH DAY IN THE HOUSE OF WORSHIP.

It is particularly to be noted that the gospel ministry that desires to see men recovered from sin and eternal destruction must give priority to the example set by Christ in this matter.

  1. The Saviour observed the Sabbath. This is a fact that should weigh heavily on the hearts/minds of every follower of Christ! Cp Exodus 20:8-11. There is an abiding requirement for a weekly Sabbath. Cp Heb 4:9. On account of Christ’s finished work of redemption a ‘keeping of Sabbath’ remains. The New Testament warrants the removal of Levitical ceremonial restrictions and a change from the seventh day of the week to the first as a commemoration of the Saviour’s resurrection—the Lord’s day.
  2. He attended the place of public worship. There was an urgency/compulsion about his attendance at the local synagogue, immediately… This was His practice, Luke 4:16. Cp Heb 10:25.
  3. He adhered to a pattern of worship that included preaching. An earlier insight into this is given, Luke 4:16-21. His teaching/preaching had the authority of God about it. It came as the word of God Himself—in part because it was an faithful/accurate exposition of Scripture; and further, given in the power of the Holy Ghost. In this He was distinguished from the scribes! Cp Matt 23:4, 2Cor 3:6. Here was a distinction between a legal/head knowledge of God’s word and a gospel/experimental knowledge of it.
